Alex Avdeef speaks on drug penetration into the brain at the Harbin Medical Univ. Pharmaceutical
Dept.in Harbin, China (2 Aug 2016). The presenter was born in Harbin. Clockwise: St. Sophia
church. His maternal grandfather, Lavr Michaelevich Gvozdëv financed and built the church from
1923 to 1932. Now it is a noted museum in the center of Pristan district of the city, not far from Sungari
River. Next are the former Czech, German, and American consulates of Harbin. Next. the prominent
Hotel Moderne, center of the Kaspe family tragedy in 1933. Two scenes from Kitaiskaya St, where
some grand buildings still remain. Finally, an old "dacha" (summer country home) on the other side
of Sungari River.

and Early Development") presentation at Univ. of Barcelona, Spain (12-16 Nov 2015). At the front are
Profs. Xavier Subirats, Elisabeth Bosch, Martí Rosés, and Elisabet Fuguet. It may have been Prof.
Clara Ràfols who took the photo.

Alex Avdeef presents departmental seminar at Univ. of Seville, Spain (6-10 Nov 2015). Also, the
Mini-Course (2-day, 8-lecture: "Physicochemical Profiling in Drug Discovery and Early Development")
was presented. Prof. Agustin García Asuero (top left), along with his colleagues, including Prof. & Dean
Jose Manuel Vega, Prof. Benito Valdés (Pres. of Inst. Royal Acad. Andalusia), Prof. Alberto Machado,
were the most kind and gracious hosts.

Kell-Avdeef: "Gradient On My Nerves: A debate on the Importance Passive Diffusion vs. Carrier-Mediated
Transport in Drug Disposition?" at 2013 AAPS National Meeting in San Antonio. Kell and coworkers (2008
-2015) put forward a controversial 'theory' that carrier-mediated transport accounts for all the cellular
uptake of pharmaceuticals, and that passive lipoidal diffusion of drugs across phospholipid bilayer
portion of cell membranes plays no role. However, this suggestion has met with some pushback and has
had limited acceptance within the membrane permeability and transport scientific community. Ten
publications emerged surrounding the spirited controversy, the last three being: (8) Smith D, et al.,
2014. Mol. Pharmaceutics, 11, 1727−1738.; (9) Kell DB, 2015. Trends Pharmacol. Sci., 36, 15-21;
(10) Zheng Y, et al., 2015. Pharm. Res. 10.1007/s11095-015-1640-3.

Hammarlund-Udenaes (Uppsala U.), and bottom right is Prof. David Smith (U. Michigan) posing some
vibrant questions, as Dr. David Turner (Simcyp-Certara, hands folded) takes it in. After the debate,
many participants were drawn to a local pub for libations of reconciliation.
